News from RascalFlatts.com - BTBR Still Number One!

From RascalFlatts.com - February 22, 2005

Broken Road STILL On Top

Five weeks ago, Bless The Broken Road clinched the #1 position on the Radio and Records Country Singles chart. This week it remains on top, fending off Keith Urban and Josh Gracin once again. The single marks the band's most dominant run up the chart to date, not only as the longest lasting Number One hit, but the fastest rising as well. Thanks for all of your support, Rascal Flatts fans. We love ya!

Gainesville, FL pre-show article

From the Gainesville Sun:

Article published Feb 17, 2005
Pop goes country
Chart-topping trio Rascal Flatts toasts the O'Dome

With their tousled and spiky haircuts, soul patches and Converse sneakers, the members of Rascal Flatts don't look like your habitual country musicians.

Playing the O'Dome Friday with opener Blake Shelton, fresh-faced trio Gary Levox, Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney have incurred much criticism from country purists for their pop-infused, twang-lite approach to the genre.

But traditionalists can't argue with that old-fashioned path to success.

"We all push ourselves to the max, we do," said Rooney, who phoned in from the second leg of the band's 48-date "Here's to You" tour. "It's really easy to get complacent when you've had success and you've done well financially and want to take six months off, but you can always push yourself harder. We want this thing to be bigger than we can imagine. We want to win Grammys. We want to sell 100 million albums, like Garth did."

The hard work is working hard in return.
The band's 2002 release "Melt" debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Country chart and has since gone Double Platinum. In 2003, Rascal Flatts received Vocal Group of the Year honors at the Country Music Television Awards and The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Awards - honors they secured again in 2003, in addition to winning Vocal Group of the Year at the 2004 Academy of Country Music Awards.

In October, their album "Feels Like Today" debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Pop 200 chart and its country chart. The single "Bless the Broken Road" is currently in the top spot on Billboard's Hot Country Singles & Tracks and No. 33 on Billboard's Top 100 chart.

"We just want to leave something amazing behind in country music history, so our grandkids can look back and say we did this," Rooney said.

Rooney has already left an amazing behind in country music - baring his backside in the video for "I Melt" last fall and creating quite the fuss in the usually conservative country world.

"We're always on the left side, so we knew it would turn some heads," he said. "But we never dreamed it would start some controversy."

That "controversy," incidentally, is fully covered in press clippings willingly included in the band's media kit from Schmidt Relations.

The guys enjoy letting their rough (albeit soulful) edges rub against the country grain. "That's what country music has to have to stay alive: variety," Rooney said. "You have to be on the cutting edge. That's what brings in new fans."

Radio personality Mr. Bob of Gainesville's 97.3-FM, K-Country, agreed and attributed the trio's success to "their contemporary style, marrying that with country. It's drawing the younger folks in."

That appeal is one reason Darius Dunn, associate director of the O'Connell Center, solicited the band to be the first country show at the O'Dome since Tim McGraw sold 5,200 tickets there in 1997.

"As far as how they're being received, the numbers kind of speak for themselves," said Dunn. "It's been awhile since we've had a country show here, and the community is responding in kind."

As of Monday, the O'Dome had filled 6,200 seats for the Rascal Flatts concert and expected a capacity of around 7,500. (That number, Dunn said, might be even higher if George Strait weren't performing in Orlando on the same night.)

The country bar 8 Seconds is hosting the official Rascal Flatts after-party; coordinators anticipate about 350 people. Dave Sneed, security for 8 Seconds, planned to go to the show with friends, but, he said, "we're open, so I have to work."

While the show is selling well (chart-topping rapper Snoop Dogg filled about 4,600 seats on Feb. 4), Rascal Flatts' local stop did experience some preliminary glitches. Coors is the band's official tour sponsor, but the University of Florida's administration asked the band last month to pull the beer sponsor's name from all advertising, tickets and stage equipment or else cancel the show.

With initiatives to curb student drinking now a priority for UF, "the administration felt we would be best served not having Coors as a sponsor at this venue," Dunn explained. With the show date only weeks away, UF, Rascal Flatts and the band's promoter, Clear Channel, worked out a solution: no mention of Coors in exchange for waiving UF's $12,500 O'Dome rental fee.

"The band and Clear Channel understood and were very helpful. We were pleased with the results," said Dunn. The band's management could not be reached by press time for comment on the agreement.

In the phone interview before the Coors flap, Rooney made no mention of the band's beer drinking habits or lack thereof. Their more common vices? "Coffee, beef jerky and Madden Football," Rooney said. "It's a very bad combination."

He said the band also has taken a liking to the coconut-flavored liquor Malibu. "It's so foo-foo," Rooney admitted. "(Kenny) Chesney got us hooked on it. He's a foo-foo guy. He likes those pineapple drinks with Malibu. It's like 500 calories in a glass."

Henning responds to reader comments

Sarah Henning, the journalist who reviewed the RF show at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center Arena, responded to many readers to who pointed out her error in misnaming one of the songs in the show. This was her response to my email:

Hey, Nicole -- Thanks for writing. I always enjoy hearing from readers. You're right. I did get the name incorrect, and I apologize. I had the song list right in front of me, and because I have so little time to write reviews (30 minutes, usually) sometimes I don't have time to double check everything. I do the best I can under the time constraints, and will continue to do so. Thanks for keeping me honest!

I hope you have a great week, and I'm glad to hear you had fun at the concert -- Sarah

It's good to know people can admit to mistakes when they make them.

Fargo, ND review

Rascal Flatts warms up 7,000 at Fargodome event

By Mila Koumpilova,The Forum
Published Saturday, February 12, 2005

Tank tops, short skirts and even sandals made a premature return to Fargo last night.

The Fargodome heated up sufficiently for summertime attire thanks to an early stop by country-music sensation Rascal Flatts along their 2005 “Here’s to You” tour. Many members of the almost 7,000-strong audience also sported cowboy hats -- the signature accessory of Blake Shelton, who opened for the trio.

The performers brought some solid credentials to the Dome. Rascal Flatts were recently recognized for the third consecutive year with the Country Music Association Award for best vocal group. Shelton is a CMA nominee and a darling of genre critics.

But the two acts had radically different appeal.

Shelton was by far the less flamboyant, but the spare set and the occasional simplicity of arrangements served to showcase one of the manliest voices and the most disarmingly down-to-earth personalities in country music.

He kicked off the show -- and effortlessly brought the audience to their feet -- with the spirited and humorous “Good Old Boy, Bad Old Boyfriend,” from his latest, “Blake Shelton’s Barn and Grill.” Midway, he made a detour to his two earlier albums and segued into melancholy “Austin” and “The Baby,” one about losing love, the other about losing a parent. He wrapped up on a lighter note, with the hit “Some Beach.”

Before leaving the stage, Shelton rebuked some well-wishers who had warned him against touring with Rascal Flatts because their fans supposedly don’t understand country music.

The band, including Gary Levox, Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney, had no qualms about stepping up the pop flavor to their sound that has irked some country-music purists. Often, fiddle solos evolved into hipper-sounding synthesizer beats.

The audience loved it, and outsinging their screams as well as the amped-up sound on stage presented lead singer Levox with a challenge he met with varying degrees of success. His performance of the hit single “I’m Moving On,” from their self-titled debut CD, did the most justice to his vocal range.

Another highlight was their hushed, intimate performance of “Bless the Broken Road,” secure on top of the country charts, that inspired the audience to wave lighters and -- more innovatively -- cell phones, a metaphor for the band’s blending of musical styles.

Journalistic errors

In a recent review of Rascal Flatts' performance in the Duluth News Tribune, the journalist made a mistake in naming one of the songs (called it "This Everyday Life" when in fact the title is "This Everyday Love"). The review echoed her sentiments that Rascal Flatts is not "real country," but the least she could do is spell the songs' titles correctly. Here is the link to the article:

Rascal Flatts’ Jay DeMarcus Producing New Chicago Record

NASHVILLE – (Feb. 8, 2005)- Rascal Flatts vocalist and bass player Jay DeMarcus is currently in the recording studio producing a new album for the band Chicago. The Flatts members- Jay, Joe Don and Gary- began a friendship with Chicago new lead singer Jason Scheff a couple of years ago and have written songs together. Scheff was even a guest vocalist at DeMarcus’ 2004 May wedding and performed “Will You Still Love Me.”
“Chicago was a big influence on all 3 of us growing up. I admire their musical integrity and when the opportunity came up to produce them, I couldn’t let it go by,” says DeMarcus.
Chicago has sold over 120 million albums and placed 20 singles in the top ten with 12 top ten albums.

DeMarcus is working on all off days of the “Here’s to You” Tour to complete the album, which may be out later this year.

During the weekend’s debut show in St. Louis fans sang the words to every song the entire concert and held cell phones in the air for pictures and for friends to hear what they were missing.

In celebrating their blessed tour success, RASCAL FLATTS has created a new backstage 70’s style vibe room, or “Flatt Shack,” where Gary, Jay and Joe Don get ready for the show and enjoy a private toast prior to each performance.

RASCAL FLATTS is also celebrating its second week at #1 on the R&R country chart for “Bless The Broken Road.
